ArticleSeems like yesterday that Kirsty MacColl was topping the charts with The Pogues on Fairy-tale of New York. And only last week herself with A New England. But it's actually eight years since her first chart success with There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. What's she been doing since then?

"When I had my two kids and got married I just didn't have the energy or the motivation to continue with my music," explained Kirsty. "Then I found I'd got writer's block. And when that happens, you wonder if you'll ever get it back!" Which she did - in between sessions singing with some of the biggest acts around:- Simple Minds, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Van Morrison.

Some of them returned the favour, playing on Kirsty's excellent new album, Kite, due for imminent release. Kirsty has always been willing to address what she feels is important in today's society, and the new single, Free World, currently knocking on the charts door, is no exception "It's really about greed. But it's all part of the great divide between North and South. This Government has probably done more than any other to worsen it. I don't know if song lyrics can change people's ideas - and I'm not saying everyone should write like that. But if they can make people think, at least, then the whole thing must be worthwhile. People have to take more responsibility. We're all in this together."

Kirsty's looking forward to renewing the Pogues connection with. their new album and can't wait to get out on the road again, promising she will open her tour in Scotland, but she's obviously concentrating right now on the new album. Free World she describes as more aggressive than much of the rest of it, which has an almost country and western feel at times, but she's confident it will do well. So's her elder son.
