In
1985 Polydor re-released the Desperate Character LP
after throwing in some unreleased tracks recorded for the unreleased second
album Real (as
in "The Real MacColl" predictably enough). According to Kirsty, "It
was a complete mish-mash. The first album material was pub-rock, rockabilly-ish,
while the second was much more techno: there was a lot of programming on
it. I was never even sent a copy of this schizophrenic record but a
friend of mine heard it in a restaurant. They were just cashing in on New
England being a hit."
The album was issued with the same
packaging and credits as Desperate Character so
the musicians on the Real tracks remain uncredited. The
dropped tracks were the country version of Chip Shop,
Mexican sofa and Just
one look. Of the new tracks, Roman Gardens is
actually very addictive in a synthetic sort of way. Berlin is
an enjoyable camp Cabaret pastiche and Annie doesn't
really add much to the original listing, though presumably means more to
Annie herself.
Musicians: the extra tracks are uncredited, the originals are as Desperate Character.
