Latin rhythms and wicked wit make for an unusual combination on MacColl's first album in six years. Buena Vista Social Club it isn't but her love of Cuban and Brazilian grooves is genuine and she has spent long months travelling Latin America immersing herself in the sounds of salsa and bossa nova. To this exotic soundtrack she adds her own irresistable humour. The clever innuendo of In these shoes?, already being used in an Adidas commercial, is typical. But just as amusing are Here comes that man again (about cyber sex) and England 2 Colombia 0 (picking up a married man in a pub). There are enough fine one-liners to suggest she could have made it in alternative comedy.
