PROMOTION
Promos are listed where they feature extra tracks or remixes unavailable elsewhere. Sometimes it's just a different sleeve!
However there may be other Kirsty promos out there - white label 12" singles, single track CDs from the US, and so on. Some images link to larger versions.
Angel CD single on IRS (US) DPRO-6731: includes Jay's Edit, Stuart Crichton Piano Edit (unavailable elsewhere), Into the Light Mix, Stuart Crichton Remix, Apollo 440 Remix. This was also promoted with a Valentine's Day card - same photo and with a condom inside accompanying the message "Be Sweet, Be Safe". The scan on the right is from the Australian release of the track.
As long as you hold me CD single promo on BMG/Zoo (US) ZP17163-2, otherwise only available on the soundtrack to "Mad Love".
Can't stop killing you, CD single (issued in Australia only?) on Liberation D11587 in 1994. It includes two songs unavailable anywhere else - Touch me and Fabulous Garden. There is also a US only one track promo for Can't stop killing you (IRS DPRO-6719)
Caroline one track US only CD single promo on IRS (DPRO-10793) 1995. Fairly rare.
England 2 Colombia 0 UK CD single promo, featuring the Radio version (the Scumbag one) as well as the original album version. This was released to radio stations as an album taster but was never actually released as a proper single. V2 (VVR5013303P) 2000.
Fairytale of New York US only CD single promo. Unlike the proper releases, this is billed as "Kirsty MacColl w/The Pogues". IRS (US) DPRO-10788. Very rare.
He's on the beach (backed with Please, go to sleep) was issued as a double pack of two 7" singles shrink wrapped together (for no obvious reason) with A new England and Patrick on Stiff DBUY225 in 1984. Probably fairly rare, though the actual records are identical to the standard releases.
In these shoes? 12" single promo includes Le Rosbif mix and P. mix. Numerous mixes of this track were made - the Japanese release of the Tropical Brainstorm album included one, and there were CDR copies of lots of versions around at the time. This 12" model is fairly uninteresting by comparison, but it did get its own artwork, or at least sticker! V2 (VVR5010876P) 2000.
Kirsty MacColl (itself a rehash of Desperate Character) was released as a Limited Edition with the cover photo in negative. Bizarrely, the special edition includes two additional tracks not on the mainstream release, which ended up with only three new tracks on it. The sticker says "Kirsty MacColl Special Edition: Includes two extra tracks off of the unreleased album 'Real'". The extras are Man with no name and Sleepless nights. This is an extremely rare piece of vinyl, the original version of the album is only very rare! Polydor SPELP95B, 1985. Source: CW2
The Real MacColl is a US released CD promo, and includes the following songs: Tread lightly, They don't know, A new England, Innocence (Guilt mix) and You just haven't earned it yet baby. It fetches reasonable sums on eBay whenever it appears. Charisma PRCD3564, 1990.
There's a guy works down the Truck Stop swears he's Elvis is an excellent 7" promo single, in two different variants: backed with Over You on Polydor 1981 PD2201 (Source: PM) and with Truck Stop on both sides, issued for DJ use - Polydor PD2201DJ, 1981. The song is of course a re-make of There's a guy works down the Chip Shop swears he's Elvis, presumably to cater for American audiences ignorant of the eating habits of the typical British high street.
Titanic Days US only CD single promo, IRS 58161 (1993). This had no picture sleeve but featured Kirsty's face on the actual CD. It included three tracks not available on any of the common releases: Angel (Stuart Crichton Piano Edit), Free world (live) and Miss Otis regrets (live), plus Walking down Madison. This was also released in the US on IRS 581612 as a full release. Note - The Piano edit is identical to that on the Angel promo, also the live tracks are the same as on another promo on IRS DPRO-10753 (1994): Titanic Days (edit), Free world (live) + Bad + Miss Otis regrets (live).
In fact there were three US promo releases! Advance music from Titanic Days on IRS DPRO-6716 (1993) features Titanic Days, Angel, Can't stop killing you, Bad and Soho Square. Source: PM
Treachery UK CD single promo features merely the one song, and like England 2 Colombia 0 was never actually released but was sent to radio stations for playlisting. V2 VVR5015353P (2000). There was also a US promo on Instinct INS593-2 (2001), which also has In These Shoes? (Les Rosbifs Mix) and In These Shoes? (P. Mix). Source: PM.
Tropical Brainstorm: a promo CD was released containing five of the most immediately stunning tracks: In these shoes?, Mambo de la Luna, England 2 Colombia 0, Treachery and Us Amazonians. Note that although the sleeve looks at first glance the same as the album, the lettering is different. This was issued in a cardboard slip case. Virgin, VVR1010332P
Walking down Madison American CD single release includes 7" Mix, Extended Urban Mix, Ye Olde Original Mix, Club Mix, 6am Ambient Mix (excellent and only available on some of the CD singles). Charisma 96342. Many of Kirsty's singles from that era were also released as 12" DJ promos, e.g. Madison was issued with the Club and Ambient mixes as VSTDJ1348.
You just haven't earned it yet, baby was issued as a double A-side 7" promo by IRS (IRS-8816) in 1988. The promo was released to coincide with the album She's having a baby original motion picture soundtrack - IRS C/D-6211 (Source - CS). A similar story for an Australian release, where the B side is (The Beat's) Dave Wakeling's She's having a baby. The catalog number is 652018-7 on IRS.
